Jessica Lazo Figueroa, 17 years old and a senior at Madison East High School, is a Youth Apprentice through the Madison Metropolitan School District. Growing up, she always wanted a career in construction, but did not have much knowledge about it or know where to begin. She heard about WRTP | BIG STEP through her mother’s friend, Stephanie Moreno, who is WRTP | BIG STEPās Regional Lead Coordinator for South Central Wisconsin.

Before connecting with WRTP | BIG STEP, Jessica worked at Dane Arts Mural Arts but wanted to do something more hands-on, so she enrolled in WRTP | BIG STEPās Entry Level Construction Skills training program to see if the construction path was something she would like.
Her experience with WRTP | BIG STEP was overwhelmingly positive. The staff, instructors, and mentors were very supportive of her throughout the program. In the beginning, she was nervous about being the only girl and youngest participant in the program, but her desire to keep learning and find her career path motivated her to finish the program.
WRTP | BIG STEP had a significant impact on her life. She discovered that she really enjoyed tile and brick layering and working with sheet metal. She is currently a sheet metal worker for Hooper Corp and works on projects at her very own high school. She believes that WRTP | BIG STEP helps people learn new things and figure out their future career paths. Her advice to others in similar situations is to not be afraid to try the program, as they have nothing to lose.
