Summer Trades Academy

WRTP | BIG STEP’s Summer Trades Academy is expanding! This immersive program introduces high schoolers across Wisconsin to high-demand careers in the union construction trades through hands-on learning, real-world exposure, and direct connections to industry professionals.

Who can participate?

  • High school students interested in exploring careers in the skilled construction trades.

  • Most locations only accept current high school juniors and seniors, but check your local program to confirm.

*Participation requires attending an information session with a parent or guardian and completing the registration process.

Summer Trades Academy

What is Summer Trades Academy?

Summer Trades Academy gives students a behind-the-scenes look at the skilled trades and the apprenticeship pathway. Participants explore multiple construction careers through site visits to local union trade halls, interactive activities, and conversations with experienced tradespeople who have built successful, family-sustaining careers.

This program is designed to help students make informed decisions about their future, whether that means entering an apprenticeship, continuing education, or preparing for the workforce.

Summer Trades Academy participants will:

  • Visit union training centers, trade halls, and contractor facilities
  • Watch live demonstrations from skilled trades professionals
  • Participate in hands-on activities across multiple trades
  • Learn how registered apprenticeships work in union construction

  • Explore career pathways that offer stability, growth, and strong wages
  • Develop essential employability skills, including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving
