Obtaining certified pre-apprenticeship credentials “catapulted me into my future,” says Brandon Ericson, a 2024 graduate of WRTP | BIG STEP’s Certified Production Technician and High School Equivalency Diploma (CPT HSED) training. During the 16-week program, participants simultaneously earned certifications in two Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) production technician modules focused on safety and OSHA 30, as well as their first aid and CPR certification and their HSED.
In October, Excel Custom Contractors in Franklin hired Brandon as a carpenter apprentice, where he builds multi-million-dollar dream homes across the state. Brandon credits the certifications and knowledge he received from WRTP | BIG STEP with getting him a job that he enjoys doing every day—one that pays him $23.50 per hour as a full-time apprentice.
“Brandon brought a leadership attitude and energy that was enthusiastic and infectious to the group,” says WRTP | BIG STEP instructor Brian Foley. “He was always helping others, and he’s destined to succeed.”
As a new father, Brandon says he’s continuing his education to advance his career and create the best possible life for his son. In spring 2025, he’s enrolling at Milwaukee Area Technical College to obtain a degree in carpentry—a move that will bump him up to journeyman.
“I will go to the world’s end for my son, Brandon Jr. The sky is the limit, and that is thanks to Miss Betsy and Brian Foley. They showed me that I can succeed.”
