How did you get started in construction and move into your current role?
I previously worked for an electrical subcontractor, Van Ert Electric. I completed my apprenticeship with them and IBEW Local 577. During this time, I volunteered with the Northeast Wisconsin (NEW) empowHER group. Members of the steering committee for this group told me about my current organization and the position that was starting: Statewide Director with WRTP | BIG STEP.
What do you like about your role?
I love the variety of my current role. It takes me across various industries throughout the state. I have met a lot of people during my time here. This role gives me the opportunity to provide training and career assistance to people that may not be aware of the diversity of jobs within the construction industry. The chance to help change someone’s life in a positive way is definitely the most rewarding part of my current role.
Advice for current/future women in the construction industry?
Reach out to other women in the field and construction industry. We are a minority. There is strength in finding a community of women that you can rely on to answer questions, listen to you, or even provide guidance. EmpowHER can help connect you with other women in this industry.
